Dr. Edward Wallace “Doc” Grant, of Greensburg, Kentucky, was born on May 24, 1934, on Burton Ridge in Adair County, Kentucky. He was the youngest of twelve children born to the late Logan and Reeda Chapman Grant. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday evening, February 16, 2026 at the age of 91 in Greensburg, Kentucky.
Raised in rural Adair County, he walked to the one-room school in Garlin and later graduated from Columbia High School with the Class of 1952.
Dr. Grant continued his education at Lindsey Wilson College, where he graduated as a member of the institution’s fiftieth graduating class. He honorably served his Country in the United States Army from 1954 until 1956. Following his military service, he enrolled at the University of Kentucky to complete his prerequisite studies before being accepted into Auburn University.
Doc moved to Alabama and enrolled in Auburn and, while there, welcomed his first child, Suzanne. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Auburn University in 1963. Upon returning to Kentucky, he established a long and dedicated career practicing veterinary medicine throughout Adair County and the surrounding communities.
Back home in Columbia, he was blessed with the birth of twins, Sherry and Kerry. Widely known as “Doc,” he was deeply familiar with every back road and shortcut in the county. He was always ready with a story from his many years traveling across Adair County in service to its people, their livestock and their pets.
Dr. Grant later met his wife, Rebecca “Becky” Grinstead McGuire, and together they had many years of happiness. They united in marriage on May 4, 1984 at the home of dear friends. He lovingly welcomed her three children, a teenager, a pre-teen and a little boy—Michael, Sharon, and Corey—into his life.
Following his retirement from private veterinary practice, Dr. Grant began working for the federal government. During this time, he and his wife resided in North Carolina and later South Carolina. In 2000, they returned to Kentucky and made their home in Green County.
Dr. Grant made a profession of faith in Christ at an early age and was a member of Greensburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In later years, he attended Greensburg Presbyterian Church with his grandson and SONrise Church in Glens Fork with his daughters.
Known for having an exceptionally green thumb, Dr. Grant took great pride in his large garden, abundant flowers, and meticulously maintained yard. In addition to traditional garden crops, he carefully tended numerous fruit trees and bushes. He also spent many hours in his workshop, where he found joy in crafting furniture and gifting his handmade pieces to family and friends.
Doc was a familiar sight around town and was often seen driving his white pickup truck, wearing his aviator Ray-Ban sunglasses, a cigar in hand, and with his loyal dog, Moose, faithfully by his side.
Dr. Grant was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Grant, on April 15, 2018.
Survivors include three children and their spouses: Suzanne Grant Hobbs, and Sherry Grant Arnold (Terry), both of Columbia, Kentucky, and Kerry Grant (Kerrie) of Maryland; grandchildren who lovingly called him “Papaw”: JennieLynn Bennett, Shauna Grant (Shad), Jonathon Vaughn (Shannon) all of Columbia, Amanda Moan (Talyor) of Florida, Emilee Pierce (Stephen) of Maryland and Logan Grant of Virginia; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by three stepchildren and their spouses: Sharon Gupton (Randy Hatcher) of Columbia, Corey McGuire (Angie) of South Carolina, and Michael McGuire (Heidi) of Georgia; step-grandchildren to whom he was affectionately known as “Doc-Doc”: Jessie Woods (Caleb) of Georgia, Jack Gupton (Brinleigh) of Greensburg, Jena Cumbee (Braylen) of South Carolina, and Ryder Thompson and Rylee Thompson of Benton; and two step great-grandchildren.
Additional survivors include brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Anne and Lonnie “Bud” Taylor, and Brenda Grinstead, all of Glasgow, Kentucky, and Steven “Pete” Grinstead of Nicholasville, Kentucky, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Calvin Hobbs, one step-daughter, Lia Rommelman Thompson, the mother of his children, Shirley Ann Grant, and eleven siblings: Logan Woodruff Grant, Mary Naomi Grant Pelton, Lawrence Grant, William Clifton Grant, Clinton Buchanon Grant, Norman Chapman Grant, Edward Edwin Grant, Edgar Grant, Walter Grant, Elcia Fay Grant and Allen Grant
